Roussanne is one of the most important white varieties in the Rhône Valley. It is a peculiarly fastidious grape, low productive and susceptible to fungal diseases.
Therefore it is quite hard to achieve the right ripening.
Roussanne makes aromatic elegant wines, often with flowery and lime nuances. In the northern Rhône is usually blended with Marsanne to make Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and St-Joseph. In this partnership Marsanne dominates giving the colour, body and richness of aromas to the wine, while Roussanne adds sensuality and elegance.
