Summer White Wines

Wine route

The four Kuban wineries producing best whites in the region are Semigorye Estate, Myskhako, Abrau Durso and Gai-Kodzor Vineyards.

The Wine Route lasts minimum 2 days, yet it may be extended to 3 – 4 days by request. The total mileage is about 200 km.

1

SEMIGORYE

It is better to start your first rendezvous with the Kuban white wines from a garagist wine. Gennadi Oparin from Semigorye Estate Winery is one of the bright representatives of the class.

Set out on your journey early in the morning. After arriving at Gennadi’s estate and breaking your fast with fried or scrambled chicken eggs and a cup of coffee, it’s just the right time to descend to the cellar for tasting. Have a glass of the prize-winning Sauvignon Blanc and ask Yakov, the winemaker, about the technologies and all other nuances of garage winemaking. If possible, have a talk with Gennadi himself – you’ll get lots of impressions and even may start thinking to start running a vineyard of your own. After the tasting, you may either bask in the sun lying on the lawn beside a little pond waiting for dinner, or immediately set off for the following winery.

2

NOVOROSSIYSK

The next stop, Novorossiysk, is the biggest port of the Black Sea. To strike up an acquaintance with the city, take a walk around the marine passenger terminal admiring the appearance of the Museum Cruiser Mikhail Kutuzov and the view of the Tsemes Bay.

3

If you wish, you may drive another 4 km along the sea to visit The Little Land Memorial Complex dedicated to the heroic landing operation of the Soviet sailors during World War II.

4

MYSKHAKO

It is worth fully devoting the rest of the day to Myskhako Winery.

Begin with a winery or even vineyards tour (the latter is available upon request), and then proceed to tasting. For the novices we recommend the Master Class offering a set of aromatic oils to let you grasp the ocean of the nuances and notes of a wine bouquet.

If you get hungry, then the Gourmet’s Traveling will let you combine tasting with meals. Or, you may choose to go to the Wine Pub at the Tasting Centre to have your own tasting program. Grand Reserve Chardonnay, Riesling Myskhako and Pinot Gris Villa Victoria are all looking forward to your appraisal.

Thereupon climb the observation ground at the foot of Mount Koldun to get a remarkable view of Novorossiysk and Kabardinka. Don’t forget to take wine glass – what if you feel like having a sip of wine? For the hard-users a foot ascent is recommended – it will take you some 1.5 hours one way.

The military fans may visit the former headquarters of the 8th Guards Infantry Division, the Well of Life, and the Explosion Memorial.

Taking a sea bath at Myskhako beach will pleasantly crown your evening.

A good and not very expensive lodging for the night may be found at one of the private hotels in the nearby town of Kabardinka. In fact, Novorossiysk cannot offer any good choice of decent hotels yet.

5

9

ABRAU DURSO

En route to Abrau, if you spent the night in Kabardinka or Gelendzhik, it is worth stopping by the Seven Winds observation ground. If the weather is good, you will be able to see the whole city of Novorossiysk, including Myskhako.

In Abrau Durso, the following things are a must:

  • To visit the winery with the cellars founded by Prince Leo Golitzin to learn more of the méthode champenoise technology.
  • To taste the best samples of Russian sparkling wines and think of the price for a bottle of Veuve Clicquot.
  • To take a swim or go boating in the sky-blue waters of Lake Abrau (in summer).
  • To visit the Art Park and roll the barrels/drums in the May-Your-Wishes-Come-True Pavilion.

You may also try your riddling (remuage) skills with the bottles aged in the cellars.

  • To peep into the Winery’s shop and cough up and eventually buy a bottle of rosé Brut Imperial at quite a decent price.
  • If you can afford it – to fly a helicopter. The fee is 7,500 roubles ($227) for 3 persons for a 15-minute-long flight, but the experience is worth this money. You will fly round Lake Abrau, the vineyards and – if the weather permits – go along the littoral to Southern Ozereyevka very low above the sea. You will be touched to tears by the beauty of the local landscapes.

After all these check-ins, you may have a lunch at any café or restaurant belonging to the Abrau Durso Group of Companies: Terrasse di Lago, Brut Café, or Aqua Bar.

The smart and elegant Imperial & Champagne SPA Boutique Hotel is another very peculiar place. Weary travelers can pass the rituals of relaxation in the first in Russia Champagne SPA center.

10

DINNER AT GAI-KODZOR

At the moment, the Gai-Kodzor Vineyards do not organize wine tours, however they are possible by a preliminary agreement – or if you choose to ride a bicycle round the village of Gai-Kodzor. Nonetheless, there exist minimum two easier ways of being introduced to the wines of this young winery, viz.:

1. To buy the wine in the shop and arrange a picnic at the sunset. You may choose, say, Roussanne, Viognier, Gewürztraminer to go with mussels, gray mullet or goat-fish. If this were not a White Wine Route, we could also recommend you a bottle of Shiraz or Mourvèdre.

2. To go to one of the restaurants having Gai-Kodzor in its Wine List. We recommend La Veranda in Anapa where you will have a chance to be personally introduced to the Gai-Kodzor winemakers, for that is one of their favourite spots, and try the sea delicacies from their Italian chef Paolo Lopolito.

Upon finishing the White Route, it’s the right time to think how to plan the Red Wine Route…

TRANSPORT

The transport variants are as follows:

Car

Own or rented car – if you have a friend indifferent to alcohol who is willing to take the wheel and be content with as little as food, picturesque views and your warm company.

Taxi

Not too expensive for a company of 3 or 4 – about 4,000 roubles ($120) in total. An individual tour via a travel agency will be much more expensive.

Public Transport

Extremely inconvenient, though possible. Sometimes you may even hitch-hike. Then the total budget will be about 400 – 500 roubles ($12-15) per person.

Bicycle

An extreme sport – only for those well-trained and real enthusiasts. The distances are quite long, and the roads are not fit for the cyclists.

Notwithstanding your initial point, the below route may be easily changed or supplemented at your request and according to your current mood.

Remember the following two things:

1. You have to enjoy your traveling;

2. A wine tour and haste are mutually exclusive notions.
